The sun was (mostly) shining as the ShopMate team swapped EPoS for oars at this year’s Booker Retail Dragonboat Race, held in support of GroceryAid.
Representing ShopMate were five fearless paddlers: Brian, Jan, James, Zivile and James. With great spirit, a splash of determination, and a good sense of humour, the team, working with the team from KP Snacks, gave it their all across two lively races.
42 teams competed from various well-known grocery brands and while the ShopMate Team didn’t come away with the winner’s trophy, the crew put in a strong performance and held their own among fierce competition, coming second in both their heats! More importantly, they helped raise funds and awareness for a fantastic cause that supports people across the grocery industry.
GroceryAid is the benevolent charity for anyone working—or having previously worked—in the UK grocery sector. Established in 1857, the charity offers free, confidential support ranging from immediate emotional and legal advice via its 24/7 helpline to grants for financial hardship, debt, carers, school essentials, and crisis support. They also provide mental health services including counselling, online therapy tools, relationship support via Relate, and specialised help after traumatic workplace incidents. In short, GroceryAid is there for colleagues and their families when life throws a curveball.
A big thank you to Booker Retail for organising the day and to GroceryAid for the invaluable work they do. And of course, hats off to our team for stepping up and giving it their best—both on the water and off.
The event has raised £370,000. We’re proud to support events that bring our industry together while doing a bit of good along the way.
